1.
Reformer Tubes, Harps and Manifolds for the Petrochemical Industry
Since the early 1960’s, developments in steam reforming have
resulted in increasingly higher operating pressures and temperatures.
Industrial practice has demonstrated that tubing and piping produced
by centrifugal casting are best able to withstand the increasingly
rigorous operating conditions. The companies of the Schmidt+Clemens
group have been manufacturing reformer tubes for ammonia, hydrogen,
and methanol furnaces for than 40 years. The group’s history
has progressed from the original alloy, Marker/Centralloy 4848 (HK-40),
to the present generation
alloys such as Marker/Centralloy 4852 (HP-40) and 4852 Micro (HP-40
microalloyed).
Based on this experience, we are poised to develop new alloys allowing
thinner tube walls for better heat transfer and increased catalyst
capacity.
Construction of complete tube assemblies, such as harps, often requires
manufacture of different components and assemblies that may include
top pipes, flanges, cones, pigtails, and collectors. Individual
cast components are welded
together in our facilities to permit safe transportation and to
minimize the number of field welds. Due to our extensive experience
in supplying reformer tubes and through continuous audits of quality
assurance systems at our facilities, we are fully approved by all
engineering companies.
2. Coils and Transfer Lines for Ethylene Cracking
Furnaces
The Schmidt + Clemens range of products for cracking plants includes
not only centrifugally cast tubes, but also static castings such
as return bends, elbows, Y-pieces, T-pieces, and tetra-fittings
produced by the S+C Static Casting Division. These fittings are
x-ray and dye-penetrant tested to comply with the strictest specifications.
In addition to our static cast fittings, we produce high quality
U-bends made of bent centrifugally cast tubes. Schmidt + Clemens
production capability also includes inside surface finishing of
tubes and fittings used in cracking plants. This is done to
minimize surface roughness and to avoid adherence of coke to the
walls. An emerging trend in contemporary cracking
technology emphasizes the use of small diameter tubes - as small
as 35 millimeters. The Schmidt + Clemens companies are capable of
producing this tube size with the same excellent quality our customers
have come to
expect from us in larger tube sizes. Other examples of our broad
product range for the ethylene cracking industry are transfer lines
and ready-to-install thermowells. When used in cracking applications
these components undergo severe thermo-mechanical stresses, which
dictate the use of highly specialized materials. Our alloys provide
excellent longterm
creep-rupture strength, optimum ductility, low embrittlement, and
thermal shock resistance, as well as good weldability.
As with our reformer products, our cracking furnace products are
fully approved by all engineering companies.
3. Tubes and Coils for the Direct Reduction
of Iron Ore Industry
One of the most important specialties of Schmidt + Clemens is the
manufacturing of reformer tube assemblies for direct reduction of
iron ore (DRI) plants. We are major producers of these products
as currently designed by
engineering companies. In collaboration with engineering companies
and end-users, we have developed a specific
technology and invested in special equipment for the large diameter
tubes manufactured for this application, offering excellent quality
and cost competitiveness. Coils for preheaters made of our Marker/
Centralloy ET45 Micro (45Ni-35Cr microalloyed) are supplied with
special inside surface modifications to minimize the effects of
metal dusting. During the past few years, the group has implemented
a major investment program in product and manufacturing development.
As a result, we have achieved a leadership position in the market.
Integrated Customer Service and Problem Solving
Schmidt + Clemens
Fifty years of centrifugal casting experience
in the Schmidt + Clemens group forms the
basis for a customer service policy which is,
along with our product line, continuously evolving
to better meet our customers’ changing
expectations and needs.
Our strategy to achieve this goal can be summarized
as follows:
1. Wider Product Range
In partnership with our customers, we identify joint advantages
in supplying other furnace related products such as:
• Tube sheets and supports
• Burner tips
• Thermowells
• Hangers of every design
• Components
• Refractory materials
• Pigtails
By providing all furnace related components to our customers, we
streamline their logistic efforts. By maintaining a network of highly
qualified suppliers, we are in a
position to supply complete furnace packages.
